That’s according to a report on monthly job cuts releasedf Wednesday by global outplacemengt consultancy May job cutswere 7.4 percent higherr than the same month a year ago, when planned job cuts totaled the report says. Employers have announced 822,282 job cuts so far this more than doublethe 394,193 announced through this pointy last year. While job cuts remain well abovelast year’s May marked the fourth consecutivwe decline in monthly job-cut the report says. And sincd reaching a peak of 241,7409 in January, job-cut totals have fallen by an averageof 17.5 percent per month. “However, this declinwe in job cuts couldbe short-lived,” says John A.
Challenger, chiet executive officer of ChallengerGray & Christmas, in a “Corporate downsizing may continue to remain slow during the summe r months, but if the past is any indication, we couls see the pace acceleratse again in the latter half of the third quartert through the end of the year.” Between 2001 and the second quarter had the lowest job-cuft average at 256,513. That is about 10 percent lower than the nextlargest quarter, the third quarter, which averaged 285,742 job cuts duringv the same eight-year period.
The heaviest downsizinbg typically occurs in thefourth quarter, which has averaged 352,744 job cuts since 2001, Challenger Gray & Christmas
