The program will recruitf college undergraduatesand first-yeae medical students from populations that are under-represented nationally in health-related The students will undertake a 10-week period of hands-ojn laboratory experience during the summer at the Medicakl College.
Under the guidance of Medical Collegw faculty, the students will develop investigativer knowledgeand skills, particularly in the areaz of cardiovascular, pulmonary, hematologic or sleep The experience is intendedf to build valuable skills, self-confidence and interest in the health and aid the successfulk entry into graduate school or medicall school. Dr. Kenneth Simons, senior associate dean of academic affairz and professor of ophthalmologytand pathology, and Jeannette Vasquez-Vivar, associater professor of biophysics, will lead the program, callec the Summer Research Education Program to Increase Diversity in Health Related Research.
“The goal is to work one-on-onee with each student to help them map out a plan for advancingy to the next step on their academic path and providing them with the toolsw they need toget there,” Simond said.
