Proposed Tennessee bill would tax visiting NBA, NHL players - Phoenix Business Journal:

Under House Bill 0019, Tennessee would tax athletes and entertainers performingg in the state who make morethan $50,0009 a year. The bill would increas state revenue by morethan $1.1 millionb and the funds would be used for juvenilw court-related programs. The tax would coverf opponents of the and for up to three gamea year. However, opponents of the woul d be exempt. Greg Campbell, president of business operations for theMemphis Grizzlies, said otheer states have similar taxes for professional teams. “We are awaree of the state's intention to pass a bill that woulf impose a privilege tax on professionapl basketball players in the statewof Tennessee,” Campbell said.
“We will be keepinyg a close eye on this as it continued to move through the approval process and trustthat Gov. Bredesen and his fellow lawmakerss will continue to do what is best for Tennesse and professional basketball inthe state.” At least 15 other states have a similar tax including Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado, California, Arizona, New Jersey, North Louisiana, Oklahoma, Ohio, Oregon, Indiana and Pennsylvania. Michigan has a reciprocakl law in place that chargew players that play for teams with the tax but not playera that play in stateswithout it.
